Fixing the Date of Wedding
There is a remarkable departure in the rituals involved in the fixing of the date of the wedding when compared to what obtains in the normal Hindu wedding. The date of the wedding is agreed upon by the families of both the bride and groom. On the day of the wedding proper; the bride and groom in conjunction with their friends; associates and family members will take turns to take phera in gurudwara and it will be in front of the holy Guru Granth Sahib.
The following rituals take place in a typical Sikh ritual:
Engagement ceremony/Kurmai ceremony
This is a special ceremony supervised by the bhaiji of the gurudwara. He will apply tilak on the groom’s forehead. He will recite incantations that will bring blessings to the groom. The wedding ring is now exchanged by the bride and groom in the presence of their families and friends.
Chunni Chadhai ceremony
When the engagement ceremony has been done with; the next step will be the Chunni Chadhai ceremony. It involves the visit of the family of the Sikh groom to the family of the bride. The mother of the groom will cover the face of her daughter in law to be with chunni. She will then proceed to give her the traditional gifts. According to the rituals; the mother of the groom will apply a little mehendi on the hand of the bride.
Chuda ceremony
The above ritual holds a prominent place in the ceremony of the wedding. The Sikh bride holds this aspect of the ceremony very dear to herself. It involves the gift of red and white bangles laced with golden coloured kalire which is presented by the maternal uncle of the bride to her on the occasion.
Gana Rituals
It is believed that this ritual has the potency to protect the couple from all bad spirits and omens. It is held by both families for a few days to the actual date of the wedding.
This ritual involves a lot of fun. There are two approaches to it; either both families decide on a joint affair or they agree to organize it separately in the respective homes. The atmosphere is usually fun-filled. Special dance performances for the day of the mehandi are presented by both families. The female members of both families apply mehandi on their hands.
Gharoli ritual
The marriage rituals are incomplete without the Gharoli ritual. The approach to it is that the sister-in-law of both the bride and the groom will bring water in earthen pots referred to as holy water for the couple and they are expected to bath with the water.
Milni ceremony
A gift known as Sagan is used by the bride family as an object of welcome to the groom’s family upon their arrival at the venue of the wedding. This is done to coincide with the arrival of the baraat at the wedding venue.
Wedding ceremony
If expect an elaborate ceremony on the actual day in this marriage ceremony; then you will be left disappointed. All the razzmatazz has been done on the day’s proceedings the D day. It involves a simple ceremony which is climaxed with the taking of only four pheras. The ceremony will end with the pronouncement of blessings from the elders around on the day from both parties.
